Reviews

A scathing description of Eakins home city, moralizing, priggish and narrow. The constraints to his career are systemic. Not a flamboyant type as some of the French Impressionists; he as well shared some of the constraints. The letter from a moralizing gilded age mother that sank his teaching career is particularly depressing in its manipulative moralizing. As a painter, I understand him better in view of the 'backwater' big city. But his breadth as a painter and the large number of illustrations helps with appreciating and understanding Eakins.
